Expand/ContractCity Description
Ahmedabad is a city that is growing VERY fast.
Expand/ContractPros and Cons
I find that the people are extremely friendly and helpful. Language is not a real barrier - being a college town you can always find someone who speaks English.
Expand/ContractImmigration / Visas / Work Permits
We have made our first trip to get our liquor permit. We can help you with most permits.

Expand/ContractAccomodation
You can find very secure societies to live in. There are also very nice flats available.
Expand/ContractHousehold Help
You can get all help (PA's, nannies, gardeners, drivers and cooks) at a very reasonable rate. You just have to get used to having everything done for you - including carrying your bags.
Expand/ContractCommunication
We call home using Skype and we can see the grandkids as well as talk for as long as we want. Then call on the phone and talk to other family members at a rate of $ .021 cents a minute. Internet access is just a day away for new services. To move services it takes 10 to 15 days. Just like in the USA. TV is one year behind and not very many American channels.

Expand/ContractLocal Language
Hindi and Guijart are the basic languages
Expand/ContractUtilities for the Home
Bottled water is better than the regular water. We have water delivered at a very low cost.
Expand/ContractLocal Employment
We brought our company here, but we have a hiring service that we use, because there are so many Indian traditions that we Americans do not understand about hiring and letting an employee go, so that they can save face with their families.
Expand/ContractMoney and Banks
Money is easy to get from ATM's. Although there are several stores that take credit cards, CASH is still the main currency.
Expand/ContractHealthcare
There are a lot of very clean hospitals, chemists, dental care offices etc. I have found that eye care is very affordable. Prescription drugs can be purchased over the counter at a VERY REASONABLE price.
Expand/ContractEducation
This is a town with many colleges available.
Expand/ContractTransportation
It is very easy to get around. Rickshaws are in abundance and most of the time they understand where you want to go. You can call and hire a private car in 30 minutes. Then if you have the guts to drive in Ahmedabad, you have two-wheelers and autos.
Expand/ContractShopping & Beauty Care
Shopping is getting so much better. There are several stores that cater to Americans. All you have to do is ask and they will try to get it. You can even get your eyebrows threaded. I LOVE THIS PROCEDURE. Wonderful facials, massages, pedicures and manicures.
Expand/ContractSports and Entertainment
In India, you better like cricket.
Expand/ContractPets
No information supplied.
Expand/ContractUseful Resources
'Crosswords' is a very excellent bookstore with several locations.
Expand/ContractOthers
The restaurants are coming in fast, veg and non-veg. Beef or pork you cannot get in Ahmedabad restaurants. Most of Ahmedabad don't eat eggs. Signs like this are posted: "No eggs were used in the prepartion of this food." Chocolate restaurants, go figure, they are wonderful. Indians love sweets. There is a new Marriot Hotel coming in, can't wait to visit.
