Reach out to the local population. You will be richly rewarded. The local men, however, will probably reach for you.......practice how to deflect attention with charm.
2.
Do not expect 'first world efficiency'. There are other more important things in life – like people.
3.
Rent, do not buy a property for at least the first 6 months. This will give you time to find your feet, a secure location and a property deal uncluttered with title or other issues.
4.
Recognize that tourist areas the world over can attract less salubrious locals AND expats. The Dominican Republic is no different.
