1.
Keep an open mind - try new things.
2.
Get involved in the local community - make local friends, volunteer.
3.
Get involved in the expat community - join a group or two.
4.
Learn some Bahasa Malaysia even though English is widely spoken.
5.
Be mindful, in dress and behavior, that this is predominantly a Muslim culture.

1.
You can find almost anything here, but if you have a specific brand of toiletries that you like, you may want to bring extras.
2.
Be prepared to have difficulty finding clothes or shoes (including bras) in American sizes (most clothes only come in up to US size 10, shoes up to US size 7).
3.
KL is a very safe place, but petty crime (like purse snatching) does happen so be aware of your personal items, especially when out alone at night.
4.
In general, Asians can be very curious about items that North Americans consider to be very personal: how much money do you make? How many children do you have? Are you married?
5.
Malaysia is a Muslim country, you may experience some reluctance on the part of Malaysian men to shake hands or otherwise have physical contact with a woman. Any type of formal exchange (like swapping business cards or paying for goods) is always done with the right hand, or more formally, with both hands. It is also rude to point with your first finger, so you should point with your thumb instead.
