These tips were kindly provided by volunteer Expat Women Mentors in 2007. ExpatWomen.com shares these tips in an effort to help but takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the information.

Provided by Ginnie B, British, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

1.
Reach out to the local population. You will be richly rewarded. The local men, however, will probably reach for you.......practice how to deflect attention with charm.

2.
Do not expect 'first world efficiency'. There are other more important things in life – like people.

3.
Rent, do not buy a property for at least the first 6 months. This will give you time to find your feet, a secure location and a property deal uncluttered with title or other issues.

4.
Recognize that tourist areas the world over can attract less salubrious locals AND expats. The Dominican Republic is no different.

5. SMILE.
