In September 1948, Mrs. Henry F. Grady, wife of the Ambassador to Greece, conceived the idea of bringing together the women of the American community to study their international role in Greece. When she presented her thoughts to the visiting Secretary of State, he agreed that an organized group of well-informed women would be better equipped to act as ambassadors of good will to their host country. The American Women's Organization of Greece, which began as a study group, soon expanded its direction and purpose to include welfare work.
