Looking for work in another country requires more than just the obvious CV translation. You will be confronted with issues
that probably didn't even cross your mind when you decided to go for an international career, but don't underestimate
the big impact they can have on the outcome of your adventure! Think for example about the different rules and
habits regarding immigration, job application procedures, the selection procedures and the management culture.
These tips were kindly provided by volunteer Expat Women Mentors in 2007. ExpatWomen.com shares these tips in an effort to help but takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the information.
Provided by Valerie A, British, in Malmö, Sweden
1.
Traditionally it is not an "International" city or area, so don't expect it to provide the same services as e.g. Stockholm or Singapore.
2.
Do expect it to be calm, easy driving, easy parking, with great restaurants and local food culture, relatively safe and has dozens of easily accessible golf courses.
3.
Make an effort to socialize, join clubs and say yes to invitations.
4.
There is a shortage of rental properties as Swedes consider houses to be homes not commercial ventures!
5.
Relatively high living standards and not as expensive as previously considered. Most international products are available.

1.
Accommodation is often hard to come by, so start your search early.
2.
Any kind of alcohol is only available in the government run alcohol shop, which makes it neither readily available nor cheap!
3.
Swedes are very pleasant and friendly, but do tend to stick to themselves, especially during winter. Join as many clubs as you can to network and build your friendship circle
4.
Get your personnummer as soon as possible. It is in effect your social security number, but without one you are stuck. You cannot rent a DVD, set up an account with the drycleaners, nothing!
5.
Travel. Sweden in (a good!) summer is like no other place. Make sure you get out and enjoy the coast, the seafood, and nature.
