Hello Everyone! Welcome to our new-look Expat Women newsletter. Have you seen our new-look website as well? Following six months of work behind-the-scenes, we are delighted to share with you our fresh new look and we really hope you will visit us at www.ExpatWomen.com. Our special thanks for the site go to our website designer, American repatriate Beth Nori of Nori Studios, our webmaster Ines Castro and her small team in Mexico, plus to those of you who have already encouraged us with your positive feedback!
For this month's features, we talk to: Bronwyn Bowery-Ireland, an Australian based in Shanghai, who runs a very successful global coaching academy; and Pascale Bon Yin, a French entrepreneur who is married to a Chinese filmmaker and who runs both the Frasia Golf Training Center and a non-profit association for underprivileged children in China.
Thanks for our new articles go to: Rebecca Grappo, for Sudden Departures: How They Impact Expat Families; Riana Schreuders-van den Bergh, for Living in a Global Village: How Do Expat Women Cope with Life Abroad; Megan Fitzgerald, for Expat Careers: How Breaking the Rules Can Help You in Your Job Search Abroad; and our Expat Women Girlfriend, for her answer to the confession, Keeping My Relationship Alive.
This month sees the annual FIGT (Families in Global Transition) conference in Washington, DC, and the annual FAWCO (Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas) conference in Marrakech. We will report back to you on both of these in April/May.
Finally, a reminder that the Clements Worldwide Expat Youth Scholarship is now open for 2011 entries. Please see below for details.
Thank you very much Everyone and Happy International Women's Day week!
Warmest regards, |

Sudden Departures:
How They Impact Expat Families
Rebecca Grappo |
|
As I watched the events in Egypt unfold, my thoughts were with the thousands of expat children and families who are/were living in Egypt as well as their Egyptian friends and playmates. Maybe others are thinking about the political implications of this open rebellion, but I am thinking about the many families who may be ordered to leave quickly to other safe havens... |

How Do Expat Women Cope with Life Abroad?
Riana Schreuders-van den Bergh |
|
When I first arrived in the Netherlands, I felt as if my life had come to an end. I had no job, no friends and no social support system. I missed my family back home terribly and had no idea who I was anymore. Joining up with other expat women did not seem to help me either – they all seemed so happy and in control of their lives, whereas I felt like... |

Expat Careers: How Breaking The Rules Can Help You In Your Job Search Abroad
Megan Fitzgerald |
|
Breaking the rules in a job search is an interesting topic, particularly in today's ever-changing global marketplace... Often the rules that create frustration and stress us out the most are the ones that are either not based on fact, or there is at least significant evidence to indicate that the opposite of that belief could also be true... |

Keeping My Relationship Alive
Expat Women Girlfriend |
|
Recently, my girlfriends were talking about the decline in intimacy in their relationships with their husbands, since both the arrival of their children and their transfer to Singapore. I feel the same. With my husband working long hours and travelling a lot, then coming home to three children who all want his attention... |

Sunrise In The Sahara
Zvezdana, an American in Dubai |
|
We were at the last stretch of our journey. A nine hundred and forty kilometer train ride through the Sahara. The train must have been at least fifty years old. It was a fittingly beige color, blending in nicely with the endless desert surrounding the tracks. Upon hearing the unwelcome news of the impending storm, we had quickly clambered onto the dilapidated, smelly train, amongst a mass of panicked, sweaty passengers... |
