  4. Vietnam to host the 2008 Global Summit of Women.

BERLIN, June 16, 2007 On Saturday, the 13th Global Summit of Women closed in Berlin with a ceremony including a speech by Harald Wolf, Mayor of and Senator for Berlin for Economy, Labor and Women, to bid Berlin’s farewell to delegates. A presentation by the Vietnamese Delegation led by Vice President Truong My Hoa got participants revved up for the 2008 Summit taking place in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), Vietnam, in June 2008.

“This year’s Summit achieved its mission – and went beyond,” said Summit President Irene Natividad. “It provided a forum for best practices in women’s economic and social advancement to 1000 women from 95 countries, an accomplishment no other conference can claim. Today, we are also launching the Global Consortium of Women to End Cervical Cancer, which is our chance to leave a lasting legacy of improving global women’s health.”

"Berlin is definitely the right place for women leaders to meet and exchange best practises, knowledge and joint strategies, as this city is home to a lot of smart and successful women who are major contributors to shaping the political and business life,” Harald Wolf added.

“The Berlin Summit sent a strong signal to German women and all women around the globe to claim their equal share in economic and political power."

As a signal of its long-term commitment to future generations, the Global Summit of Women, in association with the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (IFBPW) and the European Women’s Management Development (EWMD) network, today launched “The Global Consortium of Women to End Cervical Cancer” aimed at eliminating this fully preventable disease which kill 250,000 women worldwide each year.

The Consortium aims to raise public awareness and educate women on cervical cancer prevention, testing and vaccination, and encourage governments to provide women and girls with easy access to the latest screening and vaccine technologies.

“Women’s economic progress depends on having a healthy body, hence keeping women healthy is a key part of the Summit’s mission,” said Irene Natividad, President, Global Summit of Women. “The Consortium will boost our efforts to improve economic opportunities available to future generations of women. Eliminating cervical cancer could be our most significant legacy in improving women’s health in this century.”

Cervical cancer is caused by specific strains of a common virus, the human papillomavirus or HPV. While HPV infections are temporary and harmless for most women, some women develop a persistent HPV infection that exposes them to a high risk of developing cervical cancer. HPV screening helps identify persistent infections allowing for appropriate treatment to reduce the risk of cancer, while the HPV vaccine protects girls and young women from ever developing the viral infection.

“Both technology and medication exist today and are key to our objective of eliminating cervical cancer over the course of this century. The Global Summit of Women is pleased to join with the IFBPW and the EWMD to bring these advances to women all over the world and push this work which is so critical to our future”, said Natividad.

Mini-grants for Public-Private-Partnerships to Educate Women

Following the ministerial roundtable which kicked-off the Summit on June 14 and featured more than 40 female government ministers discussing public-private partnerships to promote women’s economic advancement, the Summit is awarding three mini-grants to economic development projects around the world. Each of the following projects will receive a grant of

$5,000 to ensure the project’s continuation and growth. The first grant will go to a project in Tanzania, which is aimed at developing women’s entrepreneurial skills. The second grant will help educate women on the use of modern information technology in the Republic of Georgia. The third grant will support a project of South Africa’s Ministry of Environmental Affairs and Tourism to help develop women’s skills to grow and market medicinal plants indigenous to Africa.

Vietnam to host 2008 Global Summit of Women

Also at the closing ceremony, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam was announced as the venue for next year’s Summit. “As the latest Asian economic tiger, Vietnam is a great showcase for the possibilities of the 21st century market,” said Summit President Natividad.
