| Expat Women Newsletter - May 2007 |
|
Very warm greetings to you, our valued Newsletter subscribers, for the month of May! Our big news this month is that our is now up and running. Already, we have more than 150 blogs listed on the site and we hope that you’ll help us to spread the word, to encourage more women to list, so that this section of the site grows to become a phenomenal resource for women living overseas.
|
|
This is the time of year when many employers tell their expats that they are heading abroad, changing countries or moving home. Check out our newsletter features to help you prepare for this transition. And remember, our 145 mentors are here to help you. |
|
And finally, a big thank you again for your ongoing support. We have now received over 2 million hits and over 20,000 unique users since launching in mid January, plus daily emails offering encouragement, positive feedback, constructive suggestions and ideas for improvement, which is all very much appreciated. |

Blogs are a fabulous way to learn about locations and experiences, through the eyes of real life expats. Plus they also offer a great networking tool, for bloggers who enjoy contacting other like-minded expat women.

You know you are heading abroad: the date has been set. Now the fun part: preparing the move and paperwork. Most countries expect a list of the possessions that you will be shipping and the relocation company also must have a list to organize the insurance on your move. So its time to make a home inventory.

We have recently moved back to the UK from Bombay, India. I really enjoyed my time away, however, we are all finding it really difficult to settle back ‘home’ into England! I understand that returning home is akin to reverse culture shock, but do you have any tips for us?

What are the main stresses on returning home?
Returning home after an overseas experience can be just as stressful as moving away. Professor Bruce La Brack of the University of the Pacific offers advice on the web site (funded through a FIPSE grant from the U.S. Department of Education).

Any gaijin (foreigner) who stays in Japan for long learns that the Japanese have a special relationship with trash. I, as resident Mama-san, actually had to attend Trash Class. There was a time of instruction followed by verbal quizzing along these lines: "Does this sponge go in Plastic or Metal/Fragmental? |

Mothers Day is celebrated in almost 50 countries around the world, though sometimes not on the same day. Most countries celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday in the Month of May. So if your Mother is celebrating Mothers’ Day this month (check this site for around the world), be sure you don’t forget to send your mother flowers from 1-800-Flowers.com. Delivery worldwide. Show her that you care, even when you are living abroad, which at times, truly feels like far, far away. |
