What is a Blog?
By Andrea Martins
Expat Blogs are a fabulous way to learn about locations and experiences, through the eyes of real life expats. Plus they also offer a great networking tool, for bloggers who enjoy contacting other like-minded expat women.
Not sure what a Blog is? The term “blog” is blend of the words web and log (web log). According to Wikipedia, a blog is “a user-generated website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in reverse chronological order… Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news” some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic.”
You may not recall having heard the term “blog” before, but if you are an internet-user, and you have at least a few friends, you have probably visited one of your friends’ blogs at some point in time (to read about their life, their travels, or to see their photos), perhaps without even knowing it.
is one of the most well-known social networking sites that offer blogs on its site. At the time of writing, MySpace hosted more than 147 million blogs on its site – 692,000 of which had been updated by their users that day. That’s amazing!
Blogging is typically very interactive and you can participate in blogging in two main ways:
- The first, as someone who maintains a blog – perhaps writing blog entries about your life overseas, or your hobby, or your opinions – with or without photos for your readers to enjoy; and
- The second, as someone who reads other people’s blogs, making comments on their blogs, or just reading their blogs for the pleasure of it.
One of the things I love most about Blogs, is that bloggers tend to use their blogs as a vehicle of self-expression – and so they come up with some great, creative lines. One of my personal favorites is a quote by Jessica on her blog , where she writes “At the table of life there are knives in the back, and forks in the road. I keep a spoon handy, in case life dishes up dessert.”
So, where do you go to start a Blog? If you do not have a blog, but you would like to start one, try visiting: ; ; ; ; or . These are some of the most common sites that offer free blogs on their servers.
